Innovative reusable cup with an RFID chip

Contactless reading of cup data

RFID chip = radio frequency identification chip

The RFID chip in the cup enables contactless reading and storage of data. Caterers can program the chips in line with their specific requirements, and the chips are compatible with existing systems as well.

Important benefits

The use of self-service stations lowers costs and makes things easier for catering companies. When a drink is purchased (for example a 0.5-litre Fanta), the RFID chip in the reusable cup is programmed accordingly. The customer can then pick up the right-sized Fanta at the serving station.

The RFID cups can also be used to ensure a secure deposit system. For example, the RFID chip makes it possible for customers to top up a specific amount of money to their account that will be debited when they use a cup and then credited back when they return it. An encrypted ID number in the chip ensures that it and the cup can’t be used improperly.

Reusable cups with RFID chips also support sustainability efforts by delivering real data on cup use. Among other things, the system makes it possible to obtain information on the frequency of use of each cup, which provides sound data that can be incorporated into sustainability reports.

Very popular at companies

Companies can also benefit from the chip solution, as employees can be assigned chip numbers that make it very easy to automatically debit cup deposits and then credit them again. This in turn ensures sustainable and proper use of reusable cups at companies.

The RFID chip used in the cups is an innovation that was developed jointly with the manufacturing facility operated by the parent company, FRIES Kunststofftechnik GmbH, which is based in Vorarlberg in Austria.
